VDI-Z reports on our intelligent knowledge provision in production

Intelligent knowledge provision for greater efficiency in production

The digital transformation in the industry continues to progress. While Industry 4.0 emphasized the digital networking of humans and machines, Industry 5.0 focuses on a qualitatively better collaboration. An intelligent worker assistance system plays a crucial role by providing personalized and situational knowledge directly at the workplace.

Modern assistance systems combine classic process support with intelligent knowledge transfer to empower humans with digital intelligence. These systems build on the technical possibilities of Industry 4.0 and extend them with an explicit focus on humans. The goal is to reduce the burden on skilled workers and optimally integrate their competencies.

In many manufacturing companies, a common problem is that valuable experiential knowledge is rarely documented. Demographic change and a shortage of skilled workers exacerbate this situation. Outdated or incorrect work instructions, inefficient onboarding processes and language barriers are further challenges. Digital assistance systems like our workstAItion 5.0 offer a solution by capturing, contextually providing, and making knowledge accessible.

These systems identify the current user and provide them with prepared instructions. An AI-supported chatbot answers questions about the process and acts as a digital interface between the worker and the system. The information flow becomes bidirectional, continuously improving the quality of processes.
Digital worker assistance systems are more than just display devices. They can be combined with hardware components such as laser systems, scales, or pick-by-light technologies to actively guide the worker through the process and ensure quality assurance during the ongoing process. This reduces error rates and stabilizes cycle times.

The integration of assistance systems with existing IT solutions enables seamless traceability and quality documentation, increases transparency in production, and facilitates compliance with regulatory requirements. Sustainability goals can also be better achieved through more precise planning and execution of work steps.

Intelligent worker assistance systems offer high added value across industries, especially for variable processes and high-quality standards. They accelerate onboarding, secure knowledge, increase productivity, and improve working conditions. Smaller companies also benefit from the scalability and modularity of the systems.

Industry 5.0 consciously places humans at the center of digital production. Systems like the workstAItion 5.0 effectively preserve knowledge and provide it as needed, promoting safety, quality, and efficiency in production. Digital assistance systems create the conditions for resilient, adaptable, and knowledge-based production processes and contribute significantly to the future viability of industrial value creation.
